September 1, 2004 News Updates Nancy Abizaid Robbins has lost her battle with cancer. Nancy originally came to Radio City as a summer replacement in 1954. Betty Silva Dammert recounts how she and Nancy met at the hall in June of '55. Since Betty and her folks lived in New Jersey at the time, Nancy lived with them between jobs. "It was just like having a sister. We later did the Jackie Gleason Tour together and then the TV show, plus working in Europe with the Moro Landis Dancers for over 4 months. We also worked at Blinstrubs in Boston, the Riverside Hotel in Reno and spent a month in the Dominican Republic performing in a Trade Show in '56." Betty visited Nancy in May of this year in Boston and had a great time reminiscing. Betty says, "She was a beautiful dancer and acrobat as well." Nancy is survived by 3 children and 5 grandchildren. Dorothy Orr Horesta has passed away. She was 93. For the last few years she was in a nursing home and cared for by friend, Audry Ryan. Dorothy's history with Russell Markert predates the Music Hall; she performed at the Roxy Theater as a Roxyette from 1930-1931. She was active in the Alumnae for many years, often accompanied by her dear husband, Stephen. Her elegant presence will be missed in our Alumnae. Gloria Foss Callahan passed away on June19, 2004, losing her battle with cancer. Gloria was born in Salem, Massachusetts and was A Radio City Rockette for a short while in 1948. She leaves behind a husband, three children and four grandchildren. We have lost one more special person. Heather (Cowan) Charlton has lost her battle with cancer. She passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 8, 2004. She is survived by her husband, Bob. Condolences can be sent to him at: 635 Arbor North Way Alpharetta, Ga. 30004-6608 E-mail messages can also be sent to hbcharlton@earthlink.net **~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~** In Memory of my dear friend Marion (Honey) Block Moriarty Radio City Rockette, 1941-1956 by Janice Davis Himler We first met in dancing school in 1930. In 1939 Marion graduated from South High School and I from West High School in Columbus, Ohio. Neither of us got the part of the dancer in the senior productions of "You Can't Take It With You", staged by our respective classes. That summer we were both working as the Roxy Theater's Gae Foster Girls. We danced and did a kick line up on roller skates to "Tiger Rag". The following year we were part of the "Ten Lovely Ladies" at the Beverly Hills Supper Club in Newport, Ky. Our roommates were Jeanette Dix Terrand and Sue Blandford Kays. Gene Snyder's wife, Dixie Dunbar, arranged for us to work there. We all are members of the Rockette Alumnae. Marion, her sister, Isabel, and I all danced together on the great stage. Isabel was a Rockette for many years including their trip to Paris. Isabel passed away several years ago. (Marion also had two brothers, Pete and Bob). In 1948, Honey traveled to Germany with Bob Hope's Christmas show representing Radio City Music Hall with Anne Kalman, Barbara Vaughan McCabe, Helen Fried Barrett, Olga Burke, and Gloria Blatz Natale. In 1953 she married Timothy Moriaty at St.Patrick's Cathedral. Honey and Rockette Joan Baker Colgan, who was her maid of honor, dressed at my apartment. I helped them get ready after the first show. Those of us who were working ran to the church for the ceremony after the second show, and after the third show to the St. Moritz Hotel for the reception. Honey has two sons, Joey and Tim, and two grandchildren. We took many trips with her. She always sat in the back seat leaning on the front seat, with her back seat driver's license. She also had her own room in our house. In later years, the only dancing she did was when she sang,"Easta Time is the Time for Eggs and the Time for Eggs is the Easta Time". Her son Tim drove her to New York City for the Aug.8, 2001 75th anniversary of the Rockettes. She loved seeing so many old friends once again. At 6 AM, April 17, 2004 she simply said to Joey, "I am tired" and went to sleep. Many of us lost a dear friend to complications of Parkinson's disease. When we first started dancing professionally she changed her name to Marion Devereaux and I changed mine to Janis. Two teenagers wanting to be sophisticated. My husband called her Pauline. From then on she referred to herself as Pauline. We shall all miss her. **~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~** Lenore Beetar's son-in-law is out of Baghdad and safely home on leave before he departs again for his next assignment in Heidelberg, Germany. Lenore and her daughter plan to join him in Germany some time after the end of this year. Living in Europe is something Lenore has always dreamed of doing. Best of luck, Lenore! Kathleen (O'Connor) Williams says she is getting back on her feet again - so to speak. She's still going through physical therapy but is feeling better.
